Rustenburg Hiking
Kgaswane Mountain Reserve is a nature reserve of 5,300 hectares consisting of veld and mountains run by the North West Parks and Tourism Board and is located 5 km south-west of Rustenburg on the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg.
Sunrise to Sunset Woman's Walk. Come and join us in this unique opportunity to explore and enjoy the beautiful UNESCO sanctioned Magaliesberg Biosphere, The Mountains of Wonder. This unique 100km Women's Walk will happen over 4 days, covering different areas and geological sites in the Magaliesberg Biosphere.
The Kgaswane Mountain Reserve is a place of special beauty, an escape into a mountain range of great natural appeal and an ideal destination to take tourists or out of town visitors for a day outing. Day visitors are welcome to enjoy the self drive route on tarred roads which links a number of picnic sites and view points.
The word Kumbagana is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘Place in the Sun’. It refers to the beautiful sunsets experienced at Kumbagana Game Lodge. Kumbagana Lodge is a privately owned lodge. It provides for tranquility and close encounter with nature.
Enjoy the pristine Magaliesburg at its best with a variety of indigenous flora, animals and birds with short walks and hikes (map provided) or go clambering up the gorges and see some historic sites.
Kranskloof is situated close to the well known Sparkling Waters Hotel, not far from Rustenburg in the North West Province. The farm is owned by Ronnie Bartlett, hence the other common name used for the trails. The farm also is home to Canopy Tours, the popular treetop slide experience. Come to Kranskloof for the day or book a stay at the Kranskloof camp which is suitable for camping or a group can book the hikers hut which can accommodate up to 20 people.
The Baviaanskrans Route is a 19 km hiking trail which starts off at the southern section of the Kgaswane Mountain Reserve. Hikers begin the route at Avon More camp, starting an uphill climb to the garden of remembrance. The route then follows a stream to the tierkloof waterfall.
Start: Bergheim resort camp, Magaliesberg Finish: Bergheim resort Duration: 8 km Fitness: relatively fit, particularly because of the climb Our tip: the climb to the top of the gorge can get tiring in the heat of the day; get an early start. Bergheim trail has few directional markers. Either you do the hike with someone who knows the route, or you follow a general direction (the resort may be able to give you GPS co-ordinates).
Start: Kumbagana Game Park, close to Rustenburg Finish: Kumbagana Game Park Duration: 2 days, 18 km Fitness: easy to moderate Our tip: a pool at base camp makes cooling off afterwards that much easier On the same road you would travel to reach Mountain Sanctuary Park, Kumbagana Game Park lies just before the Sparkling Waters Hotel (good to know as it is a perfect spot for a good cool drink, or tea and cake en route home).
Rustenburg Biking

Level: difficult Type of route: the bike trail at Mountain Sanctuary forms part of the Magalies Monster race; children can manage parts of it Distance: 12 km Best: any time of year Mountain Sanctuary Park used to be one of the best kept secrets of Gauteng. Few knew about the reserve and, as a consequence, most weekends were magically peaceful.
Over 100km of mainly single track trails extending across 30 private properties. The trails have been developed by Erik Schipper from Van Gaalens cheese farm. The trails are shared between horse riders, hikers, birders, mountain bikers and trails runners. Entry requires a day permit and signing an indemnity form at Van Gaalen's farm. The trails are normally open from 6h00 in summer during the weekends and 7h00 in winter. Access may be limited or closed when there are events taking place.
